Today we shot the first part of our WannaTrain and ROAR Fitness Health promo video.

For those that know me, know I am a bit of a show pony. Stick a camera in front of me and I’m on fire 😉 – well at least I fell that way anyway!

WannaTrain is the dating app version for fitness folk, connecting likeminded healthy people with trainers, studios and with individuals. Born in Bali the app has highlighted all the studios and unique classes bringing them onto on simple to use app.

This week we will be shooting around town at all the different classes I teach at 15fit, The Canggu Studio and Kompact.

Being Balanced in Bali

I have finally cracked my version of Balance. [WARNING: this is completely individual and will differ from yours]

I use the words “my version” because I don’t think it is the same for everyone, from fitness to fun, from pleasure to passions, we are all different, and this is a great thing.  

So Buffi got her groove back when she decided to have a bit of fun a few weeks ago, and she hasn’t looked back since.. [Buffi is me by the way if you didn’t already know and I’ll stopn with the third person chat haha, moving on…]..  

I am guilty of being super extreme especially when it comes to work, working out and going out. There has always been an unbalanced relationship between those three, when Party-Buffi comes out to play the other two suffer, same goes for the other two.

Being balanced for me means to work hard and train hard in the week, and what I’ve finally come to accept, is to get a bit wild and let my hair down at the weekend. The 20 year old party girl is still in there kicking and screaming and without kids or a husband, why the heck not let her out and party now and then!? 

Yesterday, I bumped into a “fellow yogi” a term I use very loosely as I really do sit more on the fitness side of the health & wellness industry and am not afraid to say so.  She suggested that instead of going out, having fun, dating, meeting new people, forgetting about work over the weekend that I should be “working on myself and meditating.” I think I may have rolled my eyes and forced a yawn. No but seriously, why do people who do yoga or meditate think that they know f’in everything?  But I prefer all the other things I am doing as a way of relaxing – why do I have to change?

She then went on explaining that all the people I know partying must be “depressed and unsatisfied in life..” WOW bold statement, especially when she has never met these people. 

The weekend release of going out, meeting new people and just having some serious fun has a great effect on my work and gym in the week.  I am more present with clients, I make sure i push myself to the max when I train and I sleep much better  –  aren’t those the same things yoga and meditation promises? Have I found my version of meditation..?

As my new free-spirited, young-at-heart beau of the month explained in simple terms that in life, two things are for sure “we are born and we die” – what ever we do in between that time is up to us, and no matter what we do that one thing is certain we will all die. Bit dark, but its true.  

So why live someone else version of happy? Why follow someone else dreams when they are not yours? 

The only advice I can give you, if you know what makes you feel happy? Yes try new things, see what you enjoy and don’t.  The best thing as you get older, it gets much easier to figure out.  Just promise me one thing, when you figure out what works for you – please don’t go pushing it down the rest of our throats!

Start to the week

Don’t know about you, but my weekend was pretty big. Turned 39 and am one of those types that drag it out. Real Birthday Saturday May 18th, so in classic style, we started celebrating Friday night.

There is nothing like a big weekend to get me in the mood to kick ass at the start of the week, which is exactly what we did.

8am start at Kompact my new favorite lil place to get a serious sweat on! ROAR has now joined the team and we cover the Monday 8am Ketttlebell class and then the afternoon classes on Tuesday at 6pm. Join me for these hardcore 30minute classes.

Healthy Eating

At the beginning, I tried to do everything myself with my little #ROARsome business. Mornings teaching #barre, #yoga and privates in the afternoon, evenings catching up on admin. Most of my weekends were spent prepping #roarsomefood, my healthy food pick up service, for my regular clients. But sometimes things are better left to the experts. Say hello to the 6-day #THRIVE meal plan for those here in Bali! My weekends are free, and planning my weekly meals is a thing of the past.

I am going to avoid using “diet” when talking about food. I have done my fair share of the D word over the last 20+ years. From a very young age my weight fluctuated going as low as 41kgs up to 63kgs. At 5’9″ my body is happy and healthy at 59kgs. Anything less, I cannot sleep, I am over-exhausted and find it hard to focus. Anything more and I just feel uncomfortable, I know my body.

Turning 39 next week, I am finally enjoying life being a little kinder and a little more patient with myself, my goals and of course, that damn thing that controls so many of us, body image dysmorphia.

Any of those times I have been on a “diet”, experimented with various weight loss trends, from Weight Watchers to Keto to quitting all sugar (the list goes on) I have often felt starved, tired, obsessed with food and meal times. Being obsessed with food, gym and weight can be exhausting, and this extreme behavior often ending with going extreme in the opposite direction at some point or another.

So in a bid to break the habit I agreed to try the new #THRIVE meal plan from 15fit and Cafe Couscous.

Not going to lie, at the beginning of the week the portions felt small. I was embarrassed to admit to myself how I was probably eating about 4 times that amount per day. I cheated here and there, adding extra egg whites to the vegan food or a cheeky sweet treat, just ‘cos I was “being so good.” Come the last few days, I finally adapted, I was feeling full of energy, without the hunger pangs I used to experience.

With three daily meals and two snacks per day, I clearly wasn’t going to starve. In fact, the #THRIVE snacks taught me it was okay to snack! And showing me what a true snack size portion should look like. Teaching between 3-6 classes 5-6 days a week, yes I am probably more active then most. This is good news! The portions are ideal for most, and is honestly a great way to learn about quantity when it comes to filling your plate.

I have clients that continue to use #THRIVE meal plans regularly, and myself and others go on it once a month just to get back to real portion sizes which easily get out of hand as the month goes on.

Bali Barre Babes at The Canggu Studio

Since setting up the ROARbarre30 and Barre Burn programs at The Canggu Studio last year, we haven’t looked back.. or looked better!

From tourists to expats we see a variety of women, and the occasional man, jumping into our classes. Barre is a safe workout for all, not only it is challenging but also fun.

Many women, myself included, have fears of getting bulky from lifting heavy or over-training. As much as PTs and fitness professionals deny this is going to happen, you only need to look at a female CrossFitters body and a Barre babe to see the results. Results are real ladies and gents!
